How I use my Stream Deck for Work

by
Cath Ellis

As a professional constantly seeking ways to optimize my workflow, I’ve discovered a game-changing tool that has significantly transformed how I work: the Elgato Stream Deck. Originally designed for streamers, this versatile device has found a valuable place in my toolkit, enabling me to streamline processes, enhance productivity, and ultimately deliver better learning experiences.

What is the Stream Deck?

At its core, the Stream Deck is a customizable control pad with physical buttons that can be mapped to various functions on your computer. While it was initially popular among gamers and streamers for controlling live broadcasts, I’ve found it to be an invaluable asset in my daily work as a Learning Designer. Whether I’m launching software, managing projects, or automating repetitive tasks, the Stream Deck allows me to do it all with the press of a button.

Enhancing Workflow with Custom Shortcuts

One of the most powerful features of the Stream Deck is its ability to create custom shortcuts tailored to specific tasks. For example, I’ve set up a dedicated button for each of my Adobe Creative Cloud applications, allowing me to launch Illustrator, Photoshop, or any other program instantly. But it doesn’t stop there—I’ve also mapped common functions within these programs to specific buttons, enabling me to execute complex commands with ease.

Imagine being able to bold text, align paragraphs, or even preview a scene in Articulate Storyline with a single press. This level of customization not only saves time but also minimizes the cognitive load associated with remembering multiple keyboard shortcuts.

Organizing Your Tools: Folders and Multi-Actions

The Stream Deck’s folder feature allows for further organization by grouping related tasks together. For instance, I’ve created folders for different stages of my workflow—design, development, and review—each containing shortcuts relevant to that phase. This setup ensures that everything I need is always at my fingertips, reducing the need to constantly switch between different programs or menus.

Another standout feature is the Multi-Action function, which enables you to perform several tasks simultaneously. For example, when I’m starting a new project, a single button press can open my project folder, launch the necessary software, and even send a tweet announcing my work—all in one go. This level of automation has been a game-changer in managing my workload efficiently.

Integration with E-Learning Tools

As a Learning Designer, I rely on various e-learning tools like Articulate Storyline and Adobe XD. The Stream Deck integrates seamlessly with these platforms, allowing for a smoother, more intuitive design process. I’ve mapped specific Storyline functions, such as previewing slides or saving projects, directly to the Stream Deck. This integration has streamlined my design process, reducing the time spent on repetitive tasks and allowing me to focus more on creativity.

For those of you working with video editing tools like Final Cut Pro or Figma, the Stream Deck offers similar benefits. It’s incredibly flexible, making it easy to adapt to whatever tools you use most frequently.

Personalized Productivity Boosters

Beyond the basics, the Stream Deck also supports a range of plugins and third-party tools that can further enhance your productivity. From controlling your music and lights to tracking your CPU performance, the possibilities are nearly endless. I’ve even added a custom color picker that allows me to quickly grab hex codes while designing, which is particularly useful when working on brand-specific projects.

Additionally, if you’re someone who’s frequently on the go, the Stream Deck mobile app is an excellent companion. It brings the functionality of the physical device to your phone, ensuring that your custom workflow is always with you, whether you’re in the office or working remotely.

Investing in Your Workflow

At first glance, the Stream Deck might seem like a luxury, but I consider it a valuable investment in my productivity. The time I save by automating routine tasks and having all my tools organized and accessible far outweighs the initial cost. Whether you opt for the full-size version, the Mini, or the mobile app, integrating the Stream Deck into your setup could be one of the best decisions you make for your workflow.

Final Thoughts

In a world where efficiency is crucial, the Elgato Stream Deck has proven to be an indispensable tool in my Learning Design practice. By reducing the friction in my daily tasks, it allows me to dedicate more time to the creative aspects of my work, ultimately leading to better-designed learning experiences.

If you’re looking to optimize your workflow, enhance your productivity, and perhaps even have a bit of fun in the process, I highly recommend exploring what the Stream Deck has to offer. It’s a small device with a big impact, and it just might become the centerpiece of your digital toolkit.
